Alien Field Guide: A BIC Lighter

CLick my BIC

You don’t think about a BIC lighter until you need fire.

Then that little plastic rectangle becomes the most important object in the room.

It might be buried in a junk drawer, hiding beneath receipts, or sitting in yesterday’s jeans. It isn’t fancy or expensive, and most of the time, you barely notice it.

But when you need it, you look for it.

You pick it up.

You flick the wheel.

Click.

There it is.

Fire.

No password. No software update. No Bluetooth pairing. No app. No subscription.

Just a flame.

When I’m finished, I put it back in a place where I think I’ll leave it, so my search will be easier the next time I need it.

A BIC lighter doesn’t try to impress you.

It just works.

Until one day you reach for it and it’s gone. Then you’re searching the counter, checking your pockets, and wondering where the hell you put the damn thing.

Maybe that’s why I’d miss it more than I realize.

There’s something comforting about having a small, dependable thing that simply does what it’s supposed to do.

Sometimes, that’s enough.

And sometimes, when you reach for something you’ve taken for granted a thousand times, you realize it had quietly become part of your routine.

Even if it was just a cheap little BIC lighter
