What road has been part of your life, and what has it witnessed?
Fifth Street in Castle Rock

For me, it’s Fifth Street in Castle Rock.
I’ve traveled Fifth Street enough times that it feels like more than just another road through town. There’s history underneath that pavement.
Fifth Street was part of the old SH 86 route through Castle Rock, connecting the town east toward Franktown. Before the modern transportation network took shape, roads like Fifth Street carried traffic right through the community instead of routing it around town.
Then Castle Rock grew.
I-25 changed the way people moved through the area. Eventually, SH 86 was moved from Fifth Street onto Founders Parkway, giving the growing community a more direct connection to I-25.
That’s what fascinates me about roads.
They aren’t just pavement and painted lines. They’re records of how a place changes.
Fifth Street has witnessed Castle Rock evolve from a much smaller community into the growing town it is today. The buildings changed. The traffic changed. The roads changed. The surrounding landscape changed.
But Fifth Street is still there.
And when I travel it today, I’m not just driving through Castle Rock.
I’m driving through a little piece of its history.
It makes me wonder how many people traveling that same road today realize what they’re actually traveling through.
Sometimes the best history isn’t in a museum. Sometimes it’s right underneath your tires
