If you could go back and give your younger self one minute of perspective about what you have today, what would you tell them not to take for granted?

Life.
You should never take life for granted.
Before everything I’ve been through, I probably didn’t think much about that sentence. Life was just there. Tomorrow was assumed.
I could make plans, change my mind, get in the car, go somewhere, work out, take care of things, and keep moving without giving much thought to how quickly any of it could change.
Now I understand that being here is not something to casually dismiss.
If I could give my younger self one minute of perspective, I wouldn’t tell him to worry about everything that might go wrong. I wouldn’t tell him to live every day as though it were his last.
I’d simply tell him to pay attention.
Pay attention to the people around you.
Pay attention to the ordinary mornings.
Pay attention to your body.
Pay attention to the freedom you have.
Pay attention to the little things that seem insignificant today because someday you may realize they were some of the best parts of your life.
Don’t assume you’ll always have tomorrow to do the thing you keep putting off.
Don’t assume you’ll always be able to do what you can do today.
Don’t assume the people you love will always be sitting beside you.
Life is happening while you’re making other plans.
If I had that one minute with my younger self, I’d probably look him right in the eye and say:
“Kid, don’t take this for granted. None of it. You’re alive. You’re here. That’s a hell of a gift. Pay attention.”
Maybe that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned.
Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be valuable.
It doesn’t have to go according to plan.
It doesn’t have to look like the life you imagined when you were younger.
It’s still life.
And if you’re lucky enough to wake up and get another day, you’ve been handed something that deserves your attention.
So I’m going to try to pay attention.
To the good stuff.
To the frustrating stuff.
To Missy doing something ridiculous.
To a Colorado storm rolling through.
To a drive in the Mini.
To a workout that feels good.
To a cup of coffee.
To the people I love.
To the ability to sit down and write these words.
Because someday, all of these ordinary things will be memories.
And today, they’re still happening.
Don’t take life for granted. Ever.
